Barcelona’s potential January offer to Edinson Cavani

Barcelona could try and tempt veteran Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani to Camp Nou with an 18-month contract ahead of the January transfer window next month.

Barça were to bid farewell to Sergio Aguero this week after the 33-year-old took the decision to retire as a result of medical concerns over his heart

It leaves a sizeable hole in the squad that Xavi has to work with and former star Alexis Sanchez is one player the club has already been linked with in recent days.

Cavani made himself a cult favourite in Manchester last season, scoring 17 goals in all competitions. But fitness trouble, particularly a recent tendon problem, has limited his availability. Even when fit he has also been forced to play second fiddle to Cristiano Ronaldo.

This is not the first time that Barça have been linked with Cavani, but journalist Gerard Romero now claimsthere will be an offer on the table for a contract until the end of the 2022/23 season.

Cavani, who turns 35 in February, could potentially earn an initial €3.5m in basic salary at Camp Nou until the end of this season, plus up to €1m in bonuses. He would then be paid €4m across next season, with up to €1.5m available in bonuses.

It would be a significant reduction on the wages he is currently paid at United, where he is thought to earn around £250,000 per week, equating to £12m, or €14m, per year.
That offer reflects the significant financial restrictions that Barcelona are having to contend with this season after seeing their salary cap slashed because of plummeting revenue.
