Reds Legend Steven Gerrard Lined Up To Replace Jurgen Klopp As Liverpool Manager
Steven Gerrard is reportedly lined up to replace Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager as uncertainty continues to mount over the German’s long-term future at the Reds.
Klopp, 53, has been lauded for his brilliant transformation of Liverpool since he arrived from Borussia Dortmund in 2015.
The Reds lifted the Champions League title in 2019 and captured the sought-after Premier League trophy in 2020 under Klopp’s reign at Anfield.
However, Liverpool’s title defence looks almost certain to be over as they languish league leaders Manchester City by a whopping 22 points.
The Daily Mirror reports rumblings that Klopp could say ‘yes’ at the opportunity of succeeding Joachim Low as head coach of Germany’s international team.
The newspaper added that the German Football Association (DFB) considers the Liverpool boss as the ‘outstanding candidate’ for the position.
And the DFB will ‘make their approach’ for Klopp once Low’s future is ‘sealed.’
Low has been Germany’s manager since 2006 and successfully captured the World Cup trophy in 2014.
However, Germany crashed out of the 2018 World Cup in the early stages and endured a nightmare time in the Nations League.
Low could find himself on the chopping block should Germany deliver an underwhelming performance at this summer’s rescheduled Euro 2020.
According to The Mirror, a ‘well-placed Liverpool source’ has suggested that it would be ‘difficult’ for Klopp to turn down the Germany position if he was approached by the DFB.
Klopp’s exit from Anfield would open up the path for Gerrard to make a stunning return.
Liverpool owner John Henry and club chairman Tom Werner are ‘keeping a close eye’ on the Reds hero’s work at Rangers.
Gerrard, became Rangers manager in 2018 and is on the verge of capturing the Scottish Premiership title as his side hold a 15-point lead over Celtic.
Success in Scotland’s domestic league would add the ‘rubber stamp’ that Gerrard and assistant manager Gary McAllister could succeed Klopp, according to The Mirror.
Gerrard would reportedly receive the backing for the Liverpool post from Reds legends like Sir Kenny Dalglish, who has been impressed with his work at the Ibrox.
