In the first three of the last five years, Real Madrid spent €155.5m on bringing in the likes of Alvaro Morata and Theo Hernandez. Not that they needed them, though, in a glory-laden era led by Cristiano Ronaldo.
But the Portuguese star’s departure for Juventus in 2018 prompted a change in dynamic over in the Bernabeu.
Fresh from a humiliating 2018/19 campaign, Florentino Perez spared no expense during last summer’s transfer window. He spent a club-record €337.50m on stars like Eden Hazard, Ferland Mendy and Rodrigo.
The outcome? Los Blancos are back in the league title battle.
