The January window is open for business and Steven Gerrard is expected to make his own mark on the squad
Aston Villa have made approaches for Ajax left-back Nicholas Tagliafico according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Tagliafico’s current deal runs out in 18 months amid reports that Ajax will offload him in the January window.
And there has been no shortage of interest with Chelsea and Newcastle both said to among his list of suitors.
However, Romano revealed on Twitter that Villa have made approaches for the Argentina international who would join compatriots Emi Martinez and Emi Buendia at Villa Park should he make the switch.
He tweeted: “Nicolás Tagliafico will be an opportunity as he could leave Ajax in Jan. Aston Villa had approaches for Tagliafico – still no talks opened with Ajax. #AVFC He’s also been discussed internally at Chelsea weeks ago, among other names. Newcastle will decide soon on LB situation.”
However they would likely face stiff competition from Chelsea who are reeling from the blow of losing Ben Chilwell to an ACL injury while Newcastle are expected to spend big under their Saudi owners as they look to avoid relegation.
Villa have been in the market for a left-back to add competition to Matt Targett and Tagliafico has plenty of pedigree having been capped by Argentina 36 times.
He was once a previous target for Leicester City and his attack-minded style would certainly fit with what Gerrard wants from his full-backs.
The 29-year-old is blessed with Champions League experience having appeared 24 times in the competition and was once regarded as one of the finest attacking full-backs in Europe.
