According to The Athletic, James Tarkowski is having a medical at Everton ahead of a move to Goodison Park.
Tarkowski’s future has been the subject of plenty of speculation over the past few months. The experienced centre-back is out of contract at Burnley, and he’s been the subject of plenty of interest around the Premier League.
Aston Villa and Leeds were linked, but perhaps the club that will be the most annoyed about missing out on the defender will be Newcastle United.
Indeed, the Magpies reportedly held a strong interest in the ‘top’ England international heading into the summer, but they’ve lost out to Everton.
Indeed, Tarkowski joins the likes of Diego Carlos, Nico Schlotterbeck and Nicklas Sule as a centre-half Newcastle have missed out on in recent months.
Luckily for the Magpies, they remain confident that their top target, Sven Botman, will join the club, but with AC Milan circling, that deal may also collapse.
As for Everton, it the Toffees will be getting some much-needed defensive reinforcements here, and after season of truly dreadful defending, the addition of Tarkowski will be a welcomed one.
The centre-back certainly knows how to command a defence, having played a huge part in Burnley’s relative success in recent years, and if he can bring the same type of stability to Everton, Frank Lampard’s side should be keeping a lot more clean sheets next season.
Everton have won this race, and now, Newcastle will have to look elsewhere.
