Rangers eye 29 years old move to Ibrox

Rangers want Jack Butland and could make a move for the Crystal Palace stopper as they look to replace veteran goalkeeper Allan McGregor.

40-year-old McGregor has been a great servant to Rangers in two spells for the club.

Yet with his contract up this summer, Rangers may feel it’s time to move on even if McGregor wants to carry on playing.

Jon McLaughlin is staying but Rangers would still need another goalkeeper if McGregor leaves or hangs up his gloves.

It now seems that Giovanni van Bronckhorst and co are looking towards Butland this summer.

The Scottish Sun now report that Rangers are interested in signing Butland this summer.

It’s stated that Van Bronckhorst has Butland on his wish list should McGregor move on.

Butland is facing a very uncertain future at Selhurst Park.

The 29-year-old has been backup to Vicente Guaita but now appears to be on the verge of becoming third-choice at Selhurst Park.

Palace are on the verge of signing Sam Johnstone on a free transfer from West Bromwich Albion.

Given that Johnstone has hopes of being in England’s World Cup squad, you would assume that he has been given certain assurances about playing time.

Butland may therefore be bumped down the pecking order and be sat as third-choice under Patrick Vieira.

Butland had one huge fan in his early days – former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard.

Former agent Gary Mellor claimed that Gerrard had told Liverpool to go and sign Butland after Euro 2012, when Butland had travelled with England.

That move never happened though and Butland has endured a real decline in recent years.

The stopper seemed to lose his confidence at Stoke and has made just 10 Premier League appearances for Palace.

Butland needs to be playing if he is to recapture his form and Rangers may be the ideal destination for him this summer.
