Rangers star Calvin Bassey under radar of Italian clubs

Sergio Porrini: Rangers star Calvin Bassey under radar of Italian clubs

Former Rangers right-back Sergio Porrini believes that many Italian clubs are monitoring the situation of defender Calvin Bassey.

The 22-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from Ibrox with a number of Premier League clubs said interested in signing him.

However, Porrini while talking to Daily Record, suggested that a lot of Italian clubs are looking to make a move for Bassey.

“I am not surprised that Aston Villa and other top clubs are looking at him,” he said. “I know there has been Serie A interest and a lot of teams will be wanting to sign him this summer.

“Any club that has a good enough budget will be going all out to get him [Bassey] because he’s a top defender.

“The good thing for Rangers is that he is still under a contract. Bassey has had a very good season. I’m very impressed by him.”

Bassey was one of the standout players for Rangers as they reached the Europa League final, losing narrowly to Eintracht Frankfurt.  He received a lot of praise throughout the season, especially after his performance in the Europa League final.

The Nigeria international made 50 appearances in the recently concluded season where he provided six assists and just received eight yellow cards.

The left-back is a complete package, making the left wing his own and putting crosses in for his strikers to score. Considering his pace, he also had the ability to recover his positioning and make clean tackles to isolate opponent strikers.

Therefore, it is not surprising that clubs like Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and now Italian outfits are interested in acquiring his services.

The 22-year-old joined Rangers from Leicester City’s U23 team in the summer of 2020 on a free transfer. Since then, the left-back has represented his current club in 65 matches across all competitions, scoring a goal in the process.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst will not thank his former teammate at Ibrox for this news, but he will be confident that he can keep hold of his defensive star.
