Top 10 biggest spending football clubs in the last 5 years

10. AS Monaco – €622.81m

Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev’s takeover in 2011 saw Monaco climb from bottom of Ligue 2 to champions of Ligue 1 in 2017.

The French club used Rybolovlev’s billions to rebuild themselves well by signing several high-profile names, including Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez. While promising young players, such as Kylian Mbappe, emerged from the youth academy.

It concluded in an almost fairytale ending with Monaco winning the 2016/17 league title and reaching the Champions League semi-finals. However, top clubs took notice and signed their big players.

So while Monaco spent a hefty amount on transfers, they’ve still profited a cool €194.30m over the last five years thanks to player sales.
