Tottenham ‘close to agreeing deal’ with Barcelona player

Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet is reportedly close to joining Tottenham on loan.

The French centre back has fallen out of favour at the Spanish giants and is on the verge of agreeing a deal, but Spurs and manager Antonio Conte wants an answer soon.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the North London side are the favourites to sign Lenglet, with Roma also interested, and Barcelona are also happy for the 27-year-old to leave on a temporary basis to help with financial fail play.

Conte does not want any surprises when building his squad this year, and is keen to get the club’s transfer business done sooner rather than later.

The Italian wants an answer from Lenglet this week, or the offer will no longer be on the table.

It is thought that there is good harmony between Tottenham, Barcelona and the player, but though Lenglet is ‘close to agreeing to go on loan to Tottenham’, no decision has been made yet.

Tottenham are keen to improve in the left centre back area with Ben Davies currently first choice in Conte’s team, but are not desperate, and will not wait for Lenglet to make his decision

Barcelona manager Xavi has told Lenglet his best option is to fine a new team.

The defender made just seven starts for Barcelona last season as they finished third in LaLiga.

He signed a new contract until 2026 just 18 months ago, but he now faces the dilemma of choosing between fighting for his place or moving onto a new challenge.

Xavi is doing his best to rebuild the defence at Barca, with Andreas Christensen already joining on a free transfer from Chelsea and more set to arrive.

Blues defenders Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso have also been linked with the Catalan club.
